Long ago, according to an old Mexican legend, the Moon gave the axolotl a magical gift. Whenever an axolotl was hurt while exploring the lakes, tiny drops of moonlight helped it grow strong again. The other animals called it "the little creature that never gives up."
Now for the real story...
Axolotls are one of the most amazing animals on Earth. They can regrow lost legs, tails, parts of their heart, spinal cord and even parts of their brain without leaving scars.
Scientists from all over the world study axolotls because they hope to learn how this incredible healing ability works. One day, their discoveries could help doctors heal injuries in people too.
Sadly, wild axolotls are now critically endangered because of pollution, habitat loss and invasive species. Protecting their home means protecting one of nature's greatest wonders.
